Administered by FEMA, the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) is intended to ensure that the President can rapidly and effectively address and warn the public over a broad range of communications devices and under any emergency condition. IPAWS will be able to reliably and efficiently send alerts by voice, text, or video to all Americans, including those with disabilities or who cannot understand English.
Sandia National Laboratories, through the Department of Energy, was under contract to design, set up, and operate pilot alert and warning programs for the 2007 hurricane season to support several states and local jurisdictions in the U.S. Gulf Coast region.
Further, Sandia was contracted to provide initial development, demonstration, and interoperability evaluations of the secure architecture for message collaboration and distribution of alerts and warnings.
Sandia has concluded its current efforts with FEMA.
