Applications in Development Gas leaks are of concern to petroleum refiners and industry. They need to inspect facilities regularly to check for leakage. Currently used handheld sensors, called "sniffers," draw air into a flame ionization detector but need proximity to a leak source to work, meaning that they can only detect leaks on a point basis. However, the Remote Sensing Group has developed optical imaging techniques that can locate and detect gas leaks by visually surveying a complete area. Optical imaging uses infrared wavelengths to view a scene. Any leaking plumes of gas show up as opaque on the video screen. This method is a more effective, less costly and labor intensive way to detect leaks.
